Public Speaking – How To Be A Public Speaker

Kimberly King | September 22, 2011

Observe that the title does NOT say: how to become a public speaker, but how to BE one. That doesn’t mean that everyone has to enter it as a profession. But, as with anything done effectively, it takes a certain style to be a good public speaker. Fortunately, that style can be developed through a number of methods that nearly anyone can learn.

The first step is to have something to say that is worth hearing. But what that may be depends on two factors: the material and your audience. Just about any topic is worth exploring, but not necessarily with every audience. A group of mothers may be interested in foreign currency exchange, but the odds are against you. Unless, of course, you can talk about it in a way that engages their personal interests.

That suggests the second important point. The way a topic is treated is as important as the topic itself. Many public speakers will use humor as a method of livening up a talk. That’s a great way to go about it. Everyone enjoys a good joke or an amusing story. But, for truly effective public speaking, the humor is more than just a means for getting a laugh. It’s a way of bringing out an essential aspect of the topic in an engaging way.

But what is it to be engaging?

It means to create an interest for the audience in what you have to say, and you the speaker. That doesn’t mean public speaking is a vanity parade though that may be true of many political figures. But, as with a good novel or movie, the audience members should be on the edge of their chairs waiting to find out where the scene is going. They have to want to hear what’s being said now and how the story will develop. They have to want to get to the end to find out how it all turns out.

That can be a demanding goal. But it is made easier by observing how the pros do it.

It isn’t always feasible to listen to a number of public speakers before launching your first speech (though it would help). But you can and probably have watched a number of movies and TV shows. Pay careful attention to how the actors draw you in. Note a gesture or a look that makes you want to continue to watch the show rather than get up and get a snack. Putting on a performance is an important part of public speaking.

But the actors are not doing it all on their own. They are following the director’s instructions as guided by the script. You’ll usually have to be your own director and screenwriter. But, then, that’s part of the fun of public speaking: writing the speech.

Just as with the ‘performance’, observe how the TV show’s writers draw you in and make you want to know what happens next. Incorporate drama through describing an interesting setting with characters that endure risk and conflict. Resolve the ‘story’ in unexpected but satisfying ways.

Tailor your public speaking style and content to your audiences’ interests and you’ll have them listening for as long as you want.

How would you feel if your speeches could flow smoothly and professionally, from start to finish? If you’re serious about your speaking career, you could consider teleprompter software to help you deliver a clear message!

The Importance Of First Aid In The Workplace

Owen Jones | May 22, 2011

If you own a firm, you are almost certainly required by law to supply some form of First Aid to your employees. There may well be laws governing what degree of service you have to supply, but if there are not, this article will endeavour to help you work out a sensible approach to the question. However, whichever way you look at it, the provision of First Aid in the workshop is very important.

There are basically four reasons involved in the equation: the administerer of the First Aid, the First Aid kit, the First Aid room and the First Aid equipment. The factors influencing the above components are: the type of industry you are in, the number of workers, the sort of shifts and your distance from the closest hospital.

The shift factor is vital because you will have to supply a health care worker (at least one) for every shift. If there are workers from many subcontractors on site (such as on a building site) the chief contractor should provide health care for all the personnel on site and make a charge to the bosses of the subcontractors’ companies.

Any agreements between workers and employers and main and sub-contractors should be put in on paper and signed by all parties involved. These agreements should then by photocopied and distributed to everyone concerned.

The employer ought to provide a notice in several prominent locations throughout the site or factory giving details about where the nearest trained First Aider is and his or her name. The trained individual ought to be healthy, responsible, usually at work and be ready to leave his or her workstation instantly when asked to help.

The First Aiders ought to receive training from a recognized body and a certificate of competence ought to be given. If possible, the training should be given in your own workshop so that the trainers can take into account any local hardships.

The First Aider should be trained in keeping records. For example, although the First aider’s obligation stops when the paramedics arrive, the supplier of First Aid should keep and be able to furnish a record of any therapy given before their arrival.

The First Aid box should be checked regularly. Items that have passed their sell-by-date must be disposed of and replaced and someone has to be given the obligation for doing this and signing a register to say that the inspection has taken place. There should be a First Aid box within a couple of minutes walk of perilous locations like machinery

The kits should contain all standard things such as antiseptic, plasters, bandages, safety pins, scissors, iodine et cetera, but they should also contain remedies specific to your industry, if there are any. It is also a good idea to put a First Aid data sheet in the box just in case it is not the trained First Aider who has to supply the help.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on numerous topics, but is at present busy with school first aid kits. If you have an interest in RC vehicles, please come over to our website now at First Aid Courses Online.

Why Should I Learn Six Sigma Processes?

Craig Calvin | January 28, 2010

Lean Six Sigma is an altered form of Six Sigma Training, but also a process all its own in many capacities. Knowing the vital differences that come with Lean can prove to add more to your quality improvement projects than you might have thought possible. There are basic fundamentals of Six Sigma that will not be absent in the Lean process, but there are also a few additions to the process that make it what it is.

There are eight elements of waste that Lean Six Sigma focuses on. It has been proven that once these areas are removed from a company, their quality has improved. The following is a list of what the Lean process considers to be waste and examples to each area.

-Wasted Human Talent: This category includes any employee that is not pulling their weight, thus slowing the process down. It also includes anyone without a specific job function within the process.

-Defects: This can be products or processes that are not right. These obviously need solutions to fix them before they can be eliminated.

-Inventory: This refers to an over sized “To Do” list of work. You never want to have to much product waiting to be worked on. A doctors office, for example, does not want to have to many patients in the waiting room at one time.

-Overproduction: Having too much of anything before it is needed can get in the way of efficient process operation.

-Wasted Time: The amount of time that is spent waiting for a product. Any down time should be spent on needed areas of various activities or process. For example, you should never have five employees just standing around waiting for a supply truck to arrive, instead find other areas that they can be useful while they wait.

-Motion: When talking about motion, it is pretty self explanatory. It refers to the moving around of people when there is absolutely no need for it. An great example of this is when you make an appointment for a clinic and you are sent to triage, then back to the waiting room and then to the exam room. Everything should just be down right in the exam room.

-Transportation: Any form of ineffective transportation that is used to move people or a product. If it is not necessary then it is wasteful and not needed.

-Process Waste: Process Waste refers to any that a company requires to be complete, however it has no impact on the process, product or service that the company offers.

Understanding these waste products will enhance the quality improvement projects that you approach using Lean Six Sigma processes.
