Dieting For Obese Children

Owen Jones | March 9, 2010

It is difficult to see so many children literally overburdening their bodies at such young ages by being overweight. These kids cannot run, jump or play with other children because their bodies just will not permit them to do so. Dieting is a necessity for these kids in spite of our best efforts to protect them from the self-esteem problems that often go together with obesity.

If you have a child that is well outside the average weight range for his or her age, you are the one who must take the required steps to ensure that they lose those extra pounds in order to live a life that is as close to average as they can. The first thing you have to do however is consult your child’s physician about the best possible course of action to safeguard the health of your child.

Put quite bluntly however, if you do not make the effort to help your child to lose those pounds you are placing the health of your child at risk. We do not let our kids play in the street, we do not let them run about with knives, why on Earth would we allow them to commit suicide by candy? If you have a child that is overweight, the following advice should assist you and them with their dieting.

First of all, do not make food a penalty or a reward. Food is part of the problem with your children and you should not use it against them. Instead, introduce them to healthy alternatives. Do not keep junk food in the house and do not let them buy lunch at school. Pack their lunches for school so that you know what they are eating. If you do not give them junk food to take away and they cannot have it when at home, they will be better off.

Incorporate healthy snacks into your family’s eating plan rather than junk food. Fresh fruit, chopped vegetables, nuts, and frozen yogurt are good healthy snacks for your kids. When in doubt, consult the food pyramid but watch calories in the process. You want your children to eat a well balanced diet and stop eating junk food and sweets.

Cut out the juices and pop. This may be a huge ordeal in your family but the greatest gift you can offer your child is a deep and abiding liking of water. Water works to make their stomachs feel full and keeps them hydrated for the additional exercises you should be introducing into their lives.

Make them take dance lessons, take up a sport, or simply get out and run around the yard. The worst thing you can do is to permit your children to become comatose television, computer, or video game zombies. Get them out of the house and get them active. This helps in two ways. First of all, they are not stuffing their faces if they are outside playing and having a good time. Second, they are burning calories as they play which is a big bonus in the dieting process of your children.

As your child begins to lose weight, you should start to notice a very big change in not only the way he or she bears his or herself but also in his or her relations with others. Your child will notice a restored self-confidence as the pounds come off and the teasing at school stops.

If you are at a complete loss as to how to help your child take the weight off there are camps that are designed specifically to deal with weight problems and building self-esteem in children ages 7-19. A camp may be just the answer you are looking for. Another thing to think about is to lead by example. If you do not eat junk food, if you are active, and if you do not engage in emotional over-eating your child will not be learning those behaviours from you or having them strengthened by you.

Strategies for Treating Acne

Gail Jones | March 6, 2010

Most people with acne attempt to treat their broken skin with creams, face washes, soaps, lotions and treatments. However, the easiest way to cure acne is by changing your diet and getting rid of acne-producing things such as fried food. A healthy diet, rich in natural unprocessed foods such as vegetables, fruits, grains and beans is the first recommendation for treating acne.

Foodstuffs with trans-fatty acids, chocolate, milk, milk products, margarine, shortening and synthetically hydrogenated vegetable oils, as well as fatty foods, should not be eaten. It seems that the prevalence of acne in the USA is caused by the average American diet. Americans usually eat fried food in large quantities and usually cook it in the worst possible fats and oils.

However, not all fats are bad for you, but the fats and oils that the typical American uses make them more prone to get acne and other skin problems. Items that can cause are ice cream, cheese, bacon, chocolate and milk. Furthermore, acne can’t really be treated using external skin creams and expensive soaps because the root cause of the problem exists underneath the skin.

Pimples, spots and blemishes are caused by bacteria and other irritants lying underneath the skin’s oil glands and hair follicles, which are generally caused as a result of improper hygiene, squeezing and poor diet.

This unhealthy diet may be a result of too high a proportion of items such as processed, fatty, fried and sugary foods in your diet. A diet that is healthy for your skin emphasizes raw or lightly cooked vegetables, especially green, leafy vegetables that contain valuable trace minerals and fibre. Fresh green vegetables are essential, however you should also eat more lean protein sources, such as fish and chicken and complex carbohydrates, such as rice, whole-grain bread and potatoes in your diet.

These fibre-rich foods will help ensure a healthy gastrointestinal tract, which is so important in the management of acne. You should eat three healthy meals daily in order to provide you with sufficient important nutrients and decrease your craving for sweet or/and oily, fried food.

You should eat more foods that are rich in vitamin A, like apricots, watermelons, and broccoli, along with lean beef, lentils, nuts, beans and whole grains, because they are rich in zinc, which can also be helpful in treating acne breakouts. It’s also imperative to drink plenty of water to help flush the toxins out that contribute to acne.

Joy Mitchell | March 5, 2010

What is the Atkins diet and what will you have to sacrifice in order to achieve the results you’ve seen other people get? It doesn’t really matter as long you’re nowhere near your present size twelve!

What you’ll need to begin with, is a working knowledge of what the Atkins diet is all about and what it might entail. However, before you get caught up in detail, you could always just test an Atkins diet free plan which might help you to get a grip on the situation.

There is not definite place I can say for you to get an Atkins diet free plan of course, but I’ve discovered that the Internet is the best place for you to find out just about anything and everything you want to learn. Commence by turning on your computer, it’s truly amazing how many snotty looks I receive when I state this blindingly obvious fact! In fact, you probably did the same just now!

Anyway, if you just cruise the Internet for an Atkins diet free plan, you’ll be surprised at the amount of other free plans that you’ll find as well. And if you’re not dead set on going the Atkins diet way, then you could just test any one of the other free plans. As it implies, it won’t cost you more than the time spent on the Internet.

So, just what can you hope to gain from trying an Atkins diet free plan? Well, for a kick off, you can pinpoint which kind of foods you can eat and which types of foodstuffs you can’t eat. Moreover, you have to be careful with coffee, because it can be more addictive while on the Atkins diet for some people.

Likewise, caution is required with alcohol. Some types, like lager, cider or sherry contain too much sugar, while others, like Guinness or whisky are all right in moderation. However, you should always check with your Atkins diet free plan before deciding what to drink.

Benefits of Stopping Smoking

Mike Smith | March 4, 2010

Giving up an addiction which you’ve had most of your life can be extremely difficult. Many smokers who want to quit their unhealthy habit hesitate because they feel that it’s too late or it’s too hard for them to stop. Luckily this is not true. It’s never too late to change a bad habit.

The whole process of giving up smoking will probably take a long time and will require determination and courage by the smoker. However, although at first it may be hardl to stop being addicted to nicotine, as a smoker who wants to stop, it is best to focus on the long-term benefits of quitting smoking.

It’s a known fact that smoking causes different kinds of cancers and illnesses. Experts say that each time a person smokes a cigarette, he or she will be losing part of their life span, health, money and also respect. We live in a world where there are so many anti-smoking agencies and institutions working against smoking and for this reason, smokers are generally not seen in a respectful light. So why not start to think about the benefits of quitting smoking and stop being addicted instead of losing all these for the sake of a cigarette?

They say that health is wealth and one of the most important benefits of quitting smoking is to live a higher quality of life. It does not matter if you’ve smoked for a few of years or have been a chain smoker all your life. What matters is that you have decided to quit. Starting from this point, you will be able to live a richer life with fewer illnesses meaning less suffering in hospital.

The benefits of stopping smoking are not only an increased health and an increase in life expectancy, but it can also have a positive effect on social life – you will have more friends and more (self) respect. Once a smoker quits this deadly addiction he or she will run less risk of developing cancer or heart disease and it will also mean that the ex-smoker will enjoy fresher air instead of air polluted with cigarette smoke, which will mean far less coughing and wheezing.

The benefits of stopping smoking are endless. As smoking can have an adverse effect on the sexual health of people, quitting the habit would mean that the fertility rate will be improved. Unlike in the past, you’ll have whiter teeth, fresher breath and have a higher energy level. The people around you can be happy that they can finally have fresh air to breathe. Another benefit is the savings in your purse. Cigarette packs are costly. Stopping smoking would mean that the money that was used for cigarettes could be used for other causes, such as pampering yourself with luxuries.

The benefits of giving up smoking are indeed many and the plus-points of smoking are yet to be discovered. Sure, it brings in a lot of tax and keeps some people employed, but then smokers take more time off work and spend more time in hospital than non-smokers. Smokers say it calms their nerves, but so would relaxation techniques such as yoga. Let’s face it, the public mood has swung far against smoking and smokers are vilified and pitied nowadays. They also look silly nipping out of the restaurant or pub for a cigarette every hour or less.

If you are thinking about trying how to quit smoking cigarettes, please go over to our website now at: Quitting Smoking Don’t reprint this exact article. Instead, reprint a free unique content version of this same article.

The Workshop Or Home Office Heater

Owen Jones | March 1, 2010

If you have converted your garage into a workshop or home office, you are sure to need heating of one form or another. This is because most garages are not built to the same standards of insulation as the main residential building. However, that need not present a problem. You may even have the opposite problem during the summer, as garages often do not have windows, or at least large ones, either.

Ventilation could be another matter that you will have to cope with, but we will come to that later. If you have a plentiful supply of dead wood, you could set up a pot-bellied stove, but you will have to vent the flue outside. This is very easily done, since most garage walls are only one brick or block thick. However, if they do not burn correctly, there can be a smell, which you may find disagreeable.

Or you could use a paraffin/kerosene heater. They are cheap to buy and are readily portable. These heaters do not necessarily have to have a flue. They are easy to turn on as many of them have an electric starter. Some also have a thermostat to control the temperature. They can be a hazard if there are children around as they can be tipped over. However, for most people, the problem would be the smell given off.

You could use an electric hot air heater. They are quite cheap to buy, are easily portable and do not require a flue, but they can create a very dry atmosphere and are costly to run.

One of the most common choices these days is a gas heater. There are many different types of gas heater, but most run on butane or propane. Most of the models are fairly inexpensive. The main advantage of a gas heater is that they give consistent heat, are fairly cheap to run and are portable. Or at least many of them are.

You could have one built in, but it is scarcely worth it, unless you are using gas that needs to be vented. Propane gas heaters also come with or without thermostatic controls. A propane heater could also double as a patio or deck heater on chilly evenings.

These gas heaters come in two forms: vented and unvented. The unvented models are the portable ones. They use the air from the room and the vented models have a flue that vents straight out of the garage. The slight disadvantage of the unvented model is that you have to keep the room airy at all times.

Therefore, if you decide on a portable, unvented propane heater, you must leave a window partly open in order to allow the exchange of air and these heaters can be used as patio or deck heaters during the spring and autumn/fall. However, the vented gas heaters are fixed and have a flue attached, so they cannot be moved outside. Furthermore, if you decide on a vented model, you would be better off getting a professional in to install it for you properly.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with the propane outdoor heater. If you are interested in patio heaters too, please click through to Residential Patio Heaters.
