Finding Snakes And Reptiles

Owen Jones | June 27, 2011

There are not many places in the world that haven’t been colonised by snakes and other reptiles. Snakes can be even found in cities, although it is only the friendlier ones that tend to survive human wrath. However, if you want to look for a few of the more uncommon snakes, you could try in parks and fields, on beaches or in rivers and ponds and even in the sea, depending on where you live, naturally, as sea snakes tend to live in warmer, tropical waters.

You will need to be alert and train your eyes to spot even the slightest movement. Wear clothes of dull, drab colours and move slowly, stopping often to listen for movement in the grass or bushes. In the beginning, you will have many false starts, until you learn to differentiate between the sounds of the various animals that live or hunt in the grass.

Snakes are difficult to find. Most of the adventurous snakes get killed by frightened (and often ignorant) humans, but a good tip is to look for relatively damp areas in arid regions and, conversely, dry spots in damp areas. Look for where their prey might congregate. For instance, near water for toads and frogs. Watch for frightened lizards or birds fleeing for all they are worth. And listen for geckos warning each other of the presence of a predator.

If you must move anything, at least don’t wreck it and furthermore, make sure you put it back as you found it. Two useful tools to have while out looking for snakes and other reptiles are binoculars (for tree snakes) and a snake-hook, which should also be used for moving bits of debris so that you don’t risk getting bitten by a snake or stung by a scorpion. A camera, a torch and a notebook and pen are more or less essential, depending on how seriously you take your hobby of herpetology.

You could also take a rule or tape to measure your specimens and a few plastic bags and boxes to hold them while you are doing it. However, do not kill anything and do not take anything home with you either! Aside from it not being right to wander into their territory and cause mayhem, it is often against the law too. Be very wary of picking up any snake that you cannot 100% positively identify as non-venomous. You could be miles from anywhere and will probably not have any anti-venom with you. Since many snakes can kill within 30 minutes, you would probably die.

To summarize, go looking for snakes by all means. However, take it easy and slowly and wear camouflaged clothing. Furthermore, wear strong, climbing boots to afford you some protection where you are most vulnerable and do not move anything unnecessarily. Take a snake-hook to move things if you have to; a tape, torch, camera, notebook and pen to record your experience and/or findings and a few clear plastic receptacles just in case you feel that you need to pick something up.

I hope you really enjoy your search for snakes and other reptiles, but always remember that snakes are not friendly and they are definitely not pets so be wary of bites especially if your search is not taking place in the grounds of a hospital!

What Is Equine Colic?

Owen Jones | June 4, 2011

If you have or have had a horse, you will probably have heard of equine colic. However, when you strive to find out what equine colic is, you run up against a brick wall. This is because the term is an old one, dating from the days when surgery and the knowledge of how bodies work was in its childhood. The term ‘equine’ naturally refers to ‘horses’ – from the Latin, but ‘colic’?

Well, ‘colic’ refers to any (spasmodic) pain originating in the stomach, intestines or bowels, but what colic does not refer to is a specific illness. Therefore, if you say: ‘My horse is suffering from colic’, you are saying that your horse has abdominal pains, but you do not know what is causing them or you are not saying, if you do know.

In other words colic refers to symptoms not an actual illness. You will usually have to call in a vet if you want to uncover the cause of the pain. Occasionally, these abdominal pains pass on their own like wind, but other times it can be indicative of a difficulty, particularly if the colic lasts over an hour or so.

If the pain persists for more than a few hours, you need to take the decision whether to call in the vet or not. This is never cheap as all animal-lovers know and if surgery is necessary then costs will go through the roof.

The decision is a problematic one and depends mainly on the value of the animal to you. Many horses die of undefined ‘colic’ because the owner will not or cannot pay thousands of dollars for a vets assistance.

Experience will help the horse owner to ascertain whether the cause of the colic will pass or whether surgery is crucial and a good vet will give you an honest opinion for the price of a call-out charge, which will normally be about $100..

It is difficult for the young or novice owner of a horse to know if their animal has a difficulty, but if an animal, including a human, is off its food, you can be pretty certain that something is wrong.

It might just have eaten something mildly poisonous or it may have flatulence, but it may have consumed something like a nail by accident as well. If a horse keeps peering at its flanks or even nipping at them, there might be a difficulty too.

Your horse may have a blockage or constipation if you see him having problems doing his business. This may pass or it might take a laxative to ease him or it could be something more serious.

We have all seen horses rolling in rapture in a field, but if your horse is rolling in another fashion – you think it is not the same, that may also be an sign that he has a problem. So would undue sweating after little or no exercise.

An experienced horse person will have seen all this before and have an idea what to do, but it is very distressing for the novice.

How Should I Go Shopping Online For An Air Purifier?

Owen Jones | May 4, 2011

Have you come to the conclusion that you want an air purifier for your home? You may think it is a good idea if the air in your home is ‘unclean’ in any way or even if it is damp and mildewy. There are many reasons why a home and its residents can benefit from an air purifier especially if you live on a main road or near a factory. Too many hairy pets can also be a cause of allergies which can be cleaned up by the use of an air purifier.

If you do choose to get one, there are several different kinds to choose from and various cost levels. You can also shop on or off line. In fact, the price of these devices is frequently lower on line because the vendor does not have the overheads of a bricks and mortar shop front, although you will have to keep in mind to add postage and package and any local taxes that may be appropriate. It is still usually cheaper to purchase on line rather than in the shopping mall.

However, both ways of shopping have their advantages and disadvantages, so we will take a closer look at these next. Really what you ought to do is compare both ways of shopping and see which is best for you. The way that I do that is by going on line and typing something like ‘air purifiers for sale’ into a search engine.

The results that come up will be numerous, probably well over 100,000, so pick a dozen or so and do some research. Amazon is normally a good place to read users’ reviews. Make notes on brand names, prices, functions and capabilities. Then take these notes to the Mall and go looking for air purifiers.

With your newly found information of these devices, you can question sales personnel and compare prices. Write more notes and do some comparisons.

Do not forget to add postage and packing and local taxes to the on line prices. Another item that you should consider is the warranty. What occurs if the purifier breaks down? Will you have to send it hundreds of miles away to be repaired? Who will pay for that?

It is always easier to claim on a warranty if it can be done locally. However, what are the chances of it breaking down anyway? It depends on the length of the warranty actually.

Some of the functions that you should come across whilst researching your prospective air purifier are whether it uses an air filter or not, whether it can cool air or not and whether it can dehumidify or not. These three features are convenient for different conditions, but there is no point paying for something that you will never use – the dehumidifier for instance.

Some individuals prefer a machine that does not need an air filter or which has a washable filter, but this is normally because of laziness and false economy. There are many different kinds of filters for different pollutants so they are more flexible and ultimately far better.

Compare Pet Insurance Policies

Coleen Smith | October 9, 2010

Nowadays, pet owners have started to understand the importance of insuring their pets. The payment of veterinary bills for birds, cats and dogs is the main objective for choosing to insure them. As well as emergency treatments, they need regular vaccinations, dental cleaning, health check up and even surgeries. Before you buy pet insurance, though, you should compare the available options to find the one with the best coverage at the lowest price.

Since the advancement of veterinary science, it is now possible to use radiation therapy on sick animals, perform transplants and scans. With all these facilities, it means the expenses of these treatments have also risen.

Every insurance plan should have full details of the coverage, age of the pet and its breed. With the right plans from the right provider, you can rest assured that your pet will be taken care of and fully covered in case of any treatments.

Each pet insurance company offers a variety of plans for you to choose from. They’re not usually standardized between pet insurance providers, so you’ll need to check each one out separately. Begin with the insurance provider’s level of service. How responsive are they to your emails or phone calls? Have they clearly explained the plan details to you and answered all of your questions to your satisfaction? This is the company that you’re going to count on if your pet gets sick or injured, so make sure you pick one that will handle your claims quickly and answer any concerns you may have.

The pet insurance play you choose needs to be customized to meet your pet’s needs. Many pet owners find, often when it’s too late, that the standard plan they picked didn’t offer sufficient coverage. Some of the extras to consider should be deductible amounts, prescription drugs and dental care. Are overnight stays covered if your pet requires hospitalization? What about specialists?

Make sure that the plan covers you regardless of which veterinarian you go to. Also you must make sure that the cover is immediately active once it has been approved. Try to avoid taking up plans that make you wait for a period of time before your policy begins.

The internet is a great place to start your search for the right pet insurance company. There are some companies that provide discounts or lower rates for pets that are micro chipped or if you work for animal shelters and Veterinary clinics. It is always advisable to inquire about discounts as this will enable you to compare the best rates. All it takes is a little time researching online websites for cheap offers.

Keep in mind that the cheapest policy is not always the best deal. Of course the insurance companies can offer a cheap policy with very little coverage. You should find the coverage that you want, and then find the best price on that coverage. Also, read customer reviews about the company you are considering. When people are happy with the services of a company, they will want to tell everyone else about it through online blogs and posts. Many pet insurance companies have a chart on their websites that compare coverages for their different plans. This is a great source of information. Get quotes from at least three reputable pet insurance companies, and then choose the plan that best fits your needs – and your pocketbook.

To get more information and start your pet insurance comparison, start on the internet. There’s a sample purebred dog insurance comparison chart that you can use as a template.
