Safety Advice For Truck Drivers

Owen Jones | August 20, 2011

The first safety tip for every driver of road vehicles is to take care of yourself properly. In other words, make sure that you have had enough rest and that you have been well fed and watered. If you take medication, be sure that you have taken it. You should also take care of your general level of fitness by taking regular exercise. All the above will help you remain alert and responsive but also stave off drowsiness.

A similar attitude ought to be taken towards your vehicle. This means frequent routine maintenance. This regular routine maintenance will be second nature to professional truck drivers anyway, and it will include checking the tyres for pressure and wear and checking pipes and leads for damage.

The last thing you want while you are diving down a motorway is to have a tyre or hose blow out. We have all seen substantial chunks of rubber on our roads, which are the results of such blow-outs. They are perilous to the truck driver and anyone else driving behind.

It is not usually the professional truck drivers who cause problems, but any qualified driver can hire a truck and some drivers become a little rusty. Once you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, you are accountable for it, so be sure that it is fit for use. If you are picking up a trailer, make certain that all the lights and brakes work on that too.

Awareness but alertness are two of the most vital safety factors for the divers of any vehicles, and especially truck drivers, because they are driving such huge but weighty vehicles. These substantial vehicles have their own special concerns that cars do not have.

For instance, they might have blind spots, they may become less manoeuvrable, they might become harder to stop yet the load might be perilous. Even if all that is a fact, it is still not normally the professional driver who will cause an accident. Rather it could become the Sunday driver, the kid with the stolen vehicle, the drunk driver or even just someone who has forgotten to take their spectacles with them

Truck drivers have to not only not create mistakes, but they have to anticipate yet get on the look out for the mistakes of other drivers. This is why it is so important for the driver to get alert, which equals taking supervision of the driver’s health but fitness.

Another manner of taking care of the driver is to always wear your safety belt. If there is an accident, the truck diver is almost sure to be the most experienced driver around and therefore the most helpful person there until the police and safety / rescue personnel become there. There ought to also be a fire extinguisher in the cab, whether the load is perilous of not.

The weather conditions can vary a great amount for long distance truck drivers, so it is a good idea to be aware of the local conditions and to have clothing appropriate to it. After all, you will have to get out of the cab at some time. For the same reasons, it is a sensible idea to have an effective heater and air conditioner.

A hands-free mobile phone is an essential part of anybody’s safety equipment, and a conscientious truck driver should also report any dangerous incidents to the police – items like substantial road kill, debris, reckless drivers and accidents.

The Art Of Swimming

Owen Jones | July 14, 2011

Anthropologists say that man evolved out of the sea and it is absolutely a fact that our prehistoric ancestors swam according to interpretations of cave drawings in Sura, Egypt. However, the earliest written references to swimming are from about 2000 BC, but people should have been bathing, swimming and fishing long before that.

Swimming competitions started in Europe about the turn of the Nineteenth Century, but there are sure to have been swimming competitions long before that in Europe and in other continents in the world. John Arthur Trudgen made the front crawl famous in 1873, although it is likely that this style was being used in other parts of the globe.

Until 1873, the breast stroke was the favourite style of swimming in Europe and America. The crawl, which was first known as the Trudgen, became an Olympic sport in 1896, the first of the modern Olympics, which were held in Athens. The butterfly stroke was introduced in 1952, before which it was considered as a variation of the breast stroke.

The vast bulk of our bodies is made up of water and there is a lot of oil as well. This means that the body is less dense than water, which also means that the human body floats under normal circumstances. So, the body will float in fresh and salt water at or 50%-ish below the surface.

You can rise above this level by paddling water downwards, which will push the body up or you can move forwards by pushing water behind you. A blend of both of these actions will propel a swimmer forward at or above the surface of the surrounding water.

It is easier to swim in salt water than fresh water, because the salt makes the water denser which means that your body will float higher in it. Decent swimmers or rather fast swimmers have subtle hips.

Swinging from one arm to another in the crawl, which is the fastest stroke, depends on hip action not on large arm muscles. After all, the amount of water that you can move with your hands is not that heavy.

Thigh muscles are significant for a continuous, rhythmic beat and co-ordination is equally important. There are diverse styles of swimming the crawl, some swimmers like to to draw the water back with cupped hands, others with flat hands and yet others with fingers slightly spread.

Breathing is essential for any form of continuous exercise. It is better to control the breathing so that you breathe in on one stroke, hold it for a stroke and breathe out over the next two strokes. This means that you only have to lift your mouth out of the water each four strokes.

Swimming is a fantastic exercise because it exerts many muscles at the same time, but does not put pressure on hip, knee or ankle joints. It also increases the amount of oxygen in the blood., as do most exercises, but swimming encourages the participant to hold in breath which means that the swimmer gets all the advantages from that air.

Water And Dehydration

Owen Jones | June 11, 2011

We, as human beings, as very reliant on water. We are approximately 70% water and we cannot live without it. In fact, we can go weeks without food, but merely about three days without water.

One of the sad things about the Western diet is that a great deal of individuals no longer drink water. They have entirely replaced water with sugary soft drinks, which of course contain enough water but also contain too much sugar or sugar substitute.

The first step that these individuals have to take in order to get back on track is to stop this silly, childish habit and start drinking plain water again. It has been worked out that about two-thirds of individuals do not drink enough water, which is saying that they are in a permanent condition of partial dehydration.

Water has several important functions in our bodies, but one of the most important ones is to flush out toxins. It is worth knowing that if you feel thirsty, your body has reached a state where it is crying out for water. In other words, it has already passed the state where it requires water, so endeavour not to wait until you are thirsty before you take a drink.

Another fact is that tea, coffee and alcohol (some of our most popular adult drinks) are diuretics, which means that they force urination, sometimes more than they replenish. So you can put 250mm in but you may lose 270mm. This is naturally not the purpose of drinking when you are thirsty

Exercise is another reason why we lose water. In fact, merely by being alive, we lose water due to body heat and evaporation, but while we are actually doing something, we lose water quite rapidly. You might get worried about drinking water before going to bed, but if you can do it, it is a very good thing.

If you wake up a bit groggy every day and need breakfast, tea or coffee before you can actually wake up, it may be because of dehydration, not because you have problems waking up. Being dehydrated causes drowsiness and lack of concentration.

In fact, dehydration is a major killer in the Third World. This is not because there is no water, but because the water is contaminated. This contaminated water causes diarrhoea which causes dehydration. It is important to continue drinking if you are sick even if you do not feel like eating.

It is recommended that we drink at least eight tumblers of water (say, of 250mm each) a day. More if you are exercising or sick. It sounds like a great deal of water, but most individuals are awake for about 16 hours a day, so eight glasses works out to merely one each two hours.

It is more of a problem to get into the habit of drinking water regularly than it is to actually do the drinking, but once you have acquired the habit, you will feel better on a day-to-day basis. It will not prevent you from falling sick, but your general degree of health will improve, because you are getting rid of toxins.

What Features To Select In Hockey Sticks

Adam Ciboch | June 6, 2011

It has been many years since the invention of hockey sticks and much has changed. In years past there was very little to consider when selecting a stick for the game. Currently, a player has many features that they must take into consideration as they make their choice. It is important to take the time to examine the many features available and determine which ones will help your game.

As always, the curve of the blade will play a role in your game. This was a major deciding factor in the stick selection as long as there have been choices to make. Players work better with specific curves and yours will be unique to you. Even though you have many more features to consider, it is still important that you look at the curve of the blade before making a decision.

The stick will be geared towards one hand or the other. This is because a player is generally either right-handed or left-handed. That means that a stick designed for a left-handed player needs to be used by one. Before you can consider any other features, you need to narrow the selection to the sticks that were designed for your hand.

One thing that has only become available in more recent years is the ability to choose a one or two piece stick. In the beginning only a one piece stick could be purchased. There are many that will only use those types as they feel more comfortable doing so. However, there are benefits to using a two-piece stick. The most obvious is that if damage is done to the blade, there is only the need to replace the blade and not the entire stick.

Flex is another important factor in a stick. A stick with more flex has more power behind each shot. The material that makes up the stick will determine how much flex it is given. There are many materials used to make sticks and this means that there are different degrees of flex available. If a player is stronger, they should opt for less flex. A weaker player needs more flex to get the same results with a shot.

Nothing quite impacts the stick selection quite like the price. The cost of the sticks has continued to rise as technology advanced in their production. The more advanced stick that you choose, the more you will pay for it. This is why you should determine your price range before you make a selection.

As you select the stick you will use, you will find that research is key. Hockey sticks come in a variety of models with a variety of features. Knowing what you are looking for will help you make the right choice.
