How To Build Proper Spill Kits
David R. Keller | August 8, 2011Containing a hazardous spill within a facility or on a job-site can be vital to workforce efficiency. If a dangerous mess gets out of hand, it can shut down work completely. An essential step to ensuring the smooth flow of production is to invest a little time into researching and finding the right spill kits.
Knowing what types of liquids may need to be cleaned up is vitally important. By building the kit around what it must clean, a business can limit their costs. There are typically 3 basic types of absorbents: Those designed to work on water-based, non-corrosive liquids, those used for oil-on-water hazards only and those for corrosive liquids.
Determining the largest size hazard that is possible for a given situation is an important step. By understanding this element, a business can build or buy their kit and know it is sufficient to contain any size mess. This is known as a “worst-case-scenario spill” and is the guideline by which a containment package should be designed.
Another important factor is to know how large of an area is to be covered by one kit. They come in many different sizes. Some are portable, allowing for small reaction teams to deploy quickly to the spill. Others are large and heavy and require a dolly or even a forklift to move.
The weight of importance doesn’t lessen when considering what type of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to purchase. When choosing PPE the members of the containment response team must be taken into account. Their size and gender should be factored in when buying suits, gloves and eye-protection. This will ensure all workers are safe and properly equipped to handle the job.
A way to save money when placing a containment station is to use existing storage cabinets. Since there is no regulation as to what the container must look like, any with sufficient space will suffice. Be sure that it is easy to transport and access.
Understanding how spill kits work can help a business function more efficiently. Proper PPE for each team member will allow them to work safely and quickly. All of this can lead to a savings in time and money.
