Computer Career Training Around The UK Considered

Jason Kendall | December 9, 2009

It’s really great that you’ve made it this far! Just ten percent of people are happy and satisfied by their jobs, but a huge number complain to each other and take no action. Because you’ve done research we can guess that you’re giving retraining some thought, so you’ve already stood out from the crowd. The next step is to research and follow-through.

With regard to individual training courses, discuss your thoughts with an industry expert who can talk you through the right type of training for you. An advisor who will take time to ask questions about your likes and dislikes, and discover what job role you’ll be most comfortable with:

* Is having company at work important to you? Is it meeting new people or being part of a team? Or are you better with things that you can get on with on your own?

* What do you need from the area of industry you choose? (If it’s stability you’re after, you might think twice about banks or the building industry right now.)

* Is this the last time you envisage re-training, and if so, will this new career service that need?

* Do you believe that your industry training course is commercially viable, and will provide the facility to keep you in work up to retirement age?

A predominant industry in the UK that fulfils the above criteria is the IT industry. There is a requirement for greater numbers of skilled technicians in this sector, simply have a look at a local job site and you will find them yourself. But don’t think it’s only geeky nerds looking at their computerscreens every day – there are many more roles than that. The majority of employees in IT are just like you and me, with jobs they enjoy and better than average salaries.

Training support for students is an absolute must – find a program offering 24×7 direct access to instructors, as anything less will not satisfy and will also hamper your progress.

Beware of institutions who use call-centres ‘out-of-hours’ – with the call-back coming in during normal office hours. It’s not a lot of help when you’ve got study issues and want support there and then.

World-class organisations offer a web-based round-the-clock package pulling in several support offices over many time-zones. You’re offered an environment that accesses the most appropriate office no matter what time of day it is: Support on demand.

Find a trainer that is worth purchasing from. Only true round-the-clock 24×7 support provides the necessary backup.

Commercial certification is now, undoubtedly, beginning to replace the more academic tracks into IT – why then is this happening?

With fees and living expenses for university students spiralling out of control, along with the industry’s increasing awareness that corporate based study is closer to the mark commercially, we have seen a big surge in Microsoft, CISCO, Adobe and CompTIA authorised training routes that supply key solutions to a student at a much reduced cost in terms of money and time.

University courses, for example, often get bogged down in a great deal of loosely associated study – and a syllabus that’s too generalised. This prevents a student from getting enough specific knowledge about the core essentials.

Just like the advert used to say: ‘It does what it says on the label’. The company just needs to know what areas need to be serviced, and then match up the appropriate exam numbers as a requirement. Then they’re assured that a potential employee can do exactly what’s required.

Don’t accept anything less than authorised exam simulation and preparation programs as part of your course package.

Don’t go for training programs depending on non-official exam papers and questions. The way they’re phrased can be quite different – and sometimes this can be a real headache once in the actual exam.

Clearly, it is vital to know that you are completely prepared for your final certified exam prior to going for it. Rehearsing ‘mock’ exams helps build your confidence and will save a lot of money on failed exams.

Trainees eager to start an Information Technology career usually don’t know which path they should take, or which market to achieve their certification in.

How likely is it for us to understand the tasks faced daily in an IT career when we haven’t done that before? Maybe we don’t even know anybody who works in that sector anyway.

Achieving the right choice only comes via a thorough examination across many shifting areas:

* Your hobbies and interests – as they can highlight what possibilities you’ll get the most enjoyment out of.

* What time-frame are you looking at for the retraining?

* What are your thoughts on job satisfaction vs salary?

* Some students don’t fully understand the amount of work demanded to gain all the necessary accreditation.

* You need to understand what differentiates each individual training area.

The bottom line is, your only chance of covering these is through an in-depth discussion with an advisor that has enough background to give you the information required.
